Therianthrope, No Longer A Myth!

Ever heard of therianthrope? The creature with a beast face but human body, usually occurs in fantasy novel like The Lord of the Ring. However, they are no longer a fantasy any more. Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority of UK granted permission to 2 research teams to research on hybrid embryo in January 2008.

In April, research team leaded by Dr Lyle Armstrong of Newcastle University released a statement that they had successfully produced a hybrid embryo cell composed of cow cell body and human nucleus. The hybrid embryo was made by nuclear transfer technique, removing the nucleus of a cow egg ,and fusing the cow egg with the nucleus of a human cell such as a skin cell, stem cell would be extracted 6 days later and be examined for quality and viability to see whether the technique works or not. However, the embryo would be destroyed at day 14 due to ethical issue.

This research aims to lead to development of stem cell production, as the source, human eggs are in short, while animal cells are easier to access and are considered to be a viable alternative for research to understand more about how cells behave. Stem cell production from animal cells could lead to development of new therapies as stem cell has the potential to grow into any kind of tissue. Imagine what if the hybrid embryo is allowed to develop or there is fusion of other spceies cells into new breeds, things
like oricon, would no longer be a dream.
